Captain Matthew Webb: Today it seems a celebrity is always about to swim across the English Channel, but when Captain Matthew Webb did it on 24th and 25th August 1875 he became the first man in the world to swim the twenty-one miles to the French coastline just outside of Calais. The memorial to Captain Matthew Webb was erected by public subscription in 1910, twenty-seven years after his death at Niagara. His bust stands on a large stone plinth which looks out to sea from Dover seafront.
